New EU engine rated 1 of top 11 PC punishers!!
I have been reading Maximum PC magazine today and noticed that CrySis is rated one of the top 11 "PC Punishing" games. What does this mean? This means that the engine that CrySis uses (the new engine going into EU sometime next year) is a PC killer. From what the articles about CrySis and the new DirectX 10 video cards say even the highest spec DX 10 video card available right now in a mega system has trouble producing 30 frames a second. Hold on to your hats and glasses boys and girls, if you want to continue playing the game after the Cry2 engine is integrated into EU you will be buying a whole new system and a TOP END video card.
What scares me is that I was told by some game developer friends of mine that the Cry2 engine is supposed to use low poly technology to improve performance. Even with this fact it still is a PC punisher.

Uh oh....
If that is true it may signal the end of my EU carrer. I choose not to afford a gaming station rather than a PC.
I guess I'll have to wait and see how my current machine stands up to the punishment.

The test I saw were done on the gold code candidate of CrySis. The frame rate on a Nvidi GeForceFX 8800 GTX 768 MB card ($500.00 top of the line video card) was 22 FPS. This is not conjecture nor is it speculation these are concrete benchmarked results on a hefty machine (3Ghz Dual core 2 gig of DDR running at 1+ Ghz).
This also was done not only on XP but Vista as well. Even on XP with proven optimized drivers the frame rate was only 26FPS with that card.
This card performs OUTSTANDINLGY on DirectX 9 games. With CrySis running on DX9 (XP) it still sucked ass so did all the top end ATI cards (they were even worse than NVIDIA). What is most disappointing in my opinion is the fact that DX10 SUCKS. I have seen comparative screen prints from many games that are done in DX9 mode and then DX 10 mode and the difference is almost unidentifiable. DX 10 at this point looks like it is going to be a MAJOR disappointment. The problem with DX 10 is it introduces sickeningly complex new physics and shader models that we are quite a long time from having hardware to support.
In answer to your question about full graphics mode, yes they were run with everything set at max. They were also run with everything set at minimum and the number went up a whole 4 FPS.
Like I said before, hold onto your ass, you are gonna need a new machine. The other thing that makes the Cry Engine so clunky apparently are certain other features of the engine, some of which we have already seen, such as environmental effects, light effected shadows, but others are stuff like the ability to allow stealth modes and things of that nature which could mean armor that would make you invisible on radar for real not like the BS hype about predator armor that ended up sucking just like those of us realistic players said it would.

Side comment here. You guys will be fine what is in the engine is the lighting. If you turn it off, you will do fine. Also if you observe the gamebryo engine, you can see that EU certainly doesn't use it to its full potential and has optimized it quite a bit. The Cry2 engine will certainly be optimized by then.

Well this machine I have is only about 6months hold so I would hope it can hold its own.

There is a quite a bit more to it than lighting. There is an entirely new pixel shader model, DX 10 now has environmental lighting support which is implemented in Cry2 among a few other features that escape me right now.

I did find out that those model photos are indeed coming in VU 9 and we don't have to wait for the new engine. Now, that must mean that the DX 10 details I see in the armor preview images must be static (not based on environmental physics), they still look very cool though.

I wonder at what degree its the engine and at what degree its the game that makes demand so high. It makes sense CryTek are going to show off the full potential of the engine with CrySis. For MA on the other hand it is essential to keep EU available for as many configurations as possible, even if it is at the cost of eyecandy.
IMO its very hard to say something sensible right now. I think the performance will mostly depend on how MA will implement the new engine.
