Font problem after VU

Really hope someone can help here. Since the VU, i am unable to play on the site. The graphics are great, terrain and avatar perfect. However, any text is unreadable, and when i open my inventory, or try to look at my skill points, everything just becomes a huge blur.

I have tried turning all of the options ingame and on log in page on and off in every combination I can think of, but nothing helps. And yes, I mailed a support ticket nearly 24 hours ago, but haven't received any help.

If anyone has an idea about what I can do, please let me know. I am not a happy bunny, and I can't even chip out, because I have no idea what my skills are, because I can't read the,m :-(

Are you using LCD display? Try to use Auto Adjustment option in display's menu. What is native density for your display? Try to use it in-game by setting it in options menu in client loader.

You might be missing some font files (although I would expect MA to use a replacement).
Not too sure yet on what font is used. I suggest you have a look in your windows/fonts directory and see if the following are there
- arial
- arialbd
- tahomabd
- verdanabd

You might also want to run filemon when starting the game and see what fonts are accessed (and if some are not found).
filemon can be downloaded from the microsoft website (or google for it).

Enjoy!

Ok, should have added that I am a bit of a retard technology wise. :-(

Yes, LCD. If the Auto Ajustment = AA in options, have tried No AA, 2xAA and 4xAA, no difference ingame. If by native density we mean screen resolution and pixels, i have 1024 by 678, and have tried playing around with that on the pc and on teh options, and still the same problem

if you find a missing font file with filemon (or from support), please let me know.
The old VU used arial (and arialbd) as font

Enjoy!

Ok, run filemon, couldn't really find much out.

However, with a driver update, the text problem is somewhat sorted. Now, however, the graphics are slightly worse. Clicking 'K' basically leads to the text box turning to vertical lines, my radar doubles in size and turns square. By posting in text box, that sorts itself out again. Inventory is hit and miss, sometimes has no borders and becomes blurry, some icons are not visable. Other times, it is fine, and moving around seems to change it's state. Map works perfectly fine all the time.

Any other suggestions? 25hours and still no response to support request :-(

AA which you have mentioned isn't one I thought about. Auto Adjustment is option activated directly from your display menu (button ON your display. button may be also named 'auto' or it may be activated by on screen menu. It has nothing to do with game. Just screen issue.

Anyway, I see this is out of date now. What graphic card do you use? What drivers have you installed (original, beta or modified?)? Which Windows do you use? Have you tried running other 3d games? Could you post some screenshots? Version 8.12.1 of EU is available to download, does it changes anything?

EU support usually needs few days to process support case so be patient.

I have tried changing every available option i can find under display, I have restarted the PC about 20 times to apply changes, lol :-)

Graphics card I believe is SIS3800 now, updated from site. Have a few more updates to try and install to see if it does anything. Running windows XP. Just tried Guild Wars, which runs fine. Just downloaded the latest update on EU, and no change. Latest screenshot after 'K' is pushed should appear below

SIS3800 isn't it integrated graphic? About stripes, I had similar with my old PC. It was caused by lack of RAM on graphic card. How much RAM memory do you have? Try to change your graphic shared memory (in BIOS) to 128. EU requires minimum 512 RAM memory and at lest 128 Video RAM. Keep in your mind that by making shared memory bigger you reduce amount of RAM available for system so at least 768 RAM in total is required to run EU.

Yes, it is intergrated (found out after getting teh casing open!!). Apparently, the intergrated graphics chip has 64meg. The Computer has 1.2gig RAM (initially it took me 10 minutes to turn in a circle, so bought some more). Will try what you have suggested and pray that it works :-) I have checked out the prices of the optimal requirements graphic cards, and am loathed to spend $260 on one, when MA could do another VU next month and make new card useless before I even get in put in!

I run EU on GeForce 4Ti and it works fine in most cases. Low end graphic cards like GF 7300 or Radeon x1300 will be enough for EU for at least 1-2 years. Believe me, integrated graphics are not as powerful as graphic cards. What is more you were using EU successfully on hardware (graphic card) far below minimum requirements so do not look at what MA wrote in optimal requirements.

And one more thing. You wrote that graphic chip has 64 megabytes. It doesn't has 64 megabytes but it takes 64 megabytes from your RAM memory. This is other con of integrated graphics. As I said, try to give bigger amount of memory to integrated graphics in BIOS (thing you see before windows even starts loading). For some integrated graphics 64 megabytes is maximum.

Many thanks for your help over the past 7 long hours. As I said, I am not that technically gifted, and messing around with the BIOS looks likely to cause me a lot of grief if (when!) I screw it up. Trust me, I managed to blow up my last PC by trying to fix what was probably a simple problem. Will do some price checks on the graphics cards you suggested and probably solve the problem that way. Worst case scenario is I will have to play without looking at my skill points for a while, or opening inventory too much, but on the plus side I am sure my PC will run better than it did 24 hours ago. Many thanks for your help, I understand that I am not the only person on EU that is experiencing similar problems, so I have no doubt your wisdom has helped others as well. If I ever get an easy fix, I will post here.

Excellent analysis VanBuren. I'll +k you for it as soon as I can again.

Actually I haven't tried to play EU on my dodgy old Dell D400 laptop. I might try to give it a go.
8.11 ran on that, although it is as laggy as hell (I only use it do do things in auction).

crow, you might be able to give some more memory to your display (e.g. 128 MB instead of 64). Not sure if that is possible with your hardware. Guess this is done in the bios.

But the best is indeed to go for a gfx card. It does not need to be a very high end card. I guess any card with 128 MB would do. If you live in the US, you could of course just go to a computer store, buy a cheap card, try it, and return it if it does not work.

Good luck!

Dutchie

Enjoy!
