Noob crafter - a new aproach

Hello Everyone,

I would like you to see if you think I am crazy or not.

I have decided that I am going to take up recreational crafting. The goal will be to craft items or things that I want or that can help me get what I want.

So, rather than spend a bunch of time and money crafting basic filters to feed the TT I have started with basic sheet metal and plan on getting a basic wires BP when one comes along at the right price.

My thoery goes like this:
If I attemp to craft hings that i or others want then they will have a better than TT value (TT+). So I can sell them or use them and avoid the purachs price (yes - admittedly for a much higher manufacturing cost - initially). Another bonus is that as my skills build The BP's I want to use will be improving in quality rating. So instead of have unlocked BPC and having a basic filter BP at 100 I would have a basic sheet metal and or wires at an improved rate (maybe 100 - who knows).

So, I anticipate loosing quite a bit in the begining but think it would get me to the end goal faster.

From what I have read on the other forums it appears to be the BP quality that counts more than skill in many cases - so it seems that improving the quality of the BP's I actually want to use, while building skill, would be a good idea.

Thoughts?

Ground i like the idea ... i skilled filters to 60 before moving on but you know it all depends on where you want to end up. I might be able to help you out checkout my manufacturers registry thread in the soc forum as well and see if that will help you any.

nice. I also considered crafting and thought it would be a good plan to start with a bp with a high qr. Not really decided on the bp to start skilling with.

Enjoy!

Hmmm...

Thanks guys - i appreciate the feedback and comments.

I was expecting someone to come out with "you must have BPC before you do anything real" or some such line.

So far I have been loosing on basic sheet metal as I expected but I have not been loosing as badly as I thought I would. I am at about 40-45% return and my BP is up to 10 already.

I did try to craft a few ore amps (light) and only managed to make 3 with low TT. I am going to continue to craft sheet metal (and wires when I get the BP from Kaiser - Thank you) to get my skills up a little and I am going to keep my eyes out for a higher quality BP (mine is 5.2 right now).

I'll let you all know how it goes.

Grounder, any idea on how much you invested and how much skill you got from it?

Enjoy!

In hindsight and to be honest if your serious about getting into manufacturing then skilling on low end BP's isnt really going to do you much good. For the ammount of money your going to spend skillin on sheet metal to get skills to begin with more advanced stuff your better off just chipping straight into the skills your after. To be where i am now i could have done it with 4-5k in chips if that ... or the hard way i did it 20k worth of crafting Sad

In hindsight though it is a journey and the final decision is upto you just thought id give a quick retrospective of my experience.

I tried this (BSM bp QR finally ~26) but shortage of Narc made me drop this idea.. Found enough Ali but had hard times getting Narc..

@SeleneB
Yea, not a good idea to skill crafting with narc. Use some mats that have markups close to 100%

Thats why alot of people tick basic filters up to BPC. At 1 lyst and 1 oil per tick its about 5 pec per attempt and if your just a little bit lucky you will get a fair bit of that back again. Also a skilled basic filters BP at 80+ QR is still relatively cheap.

Hello Everyone,

I understand that the cost of each click , and therfore my skilling, will be significantly greater but the goal is alos to increase the QR of usefully BP's (rather than TT food BP's) and to be able to craft components I will actually nee myself.

I struggled for a while thinking I could just buy the components (alot cheaper) but came back to the point that I would still need to skill and that would leave me with low QR BP's.

As to skilling with Narc, I agree it is costly but it is easier when you are a "narc boy". I find small amounts of narc almost everywhere I mine these days.

Regarding skills - unfortunately I have not been tracking skil gain that closely. However my average return is 62% (TT values), I have had two BP's drop and the QR of my BP is up to 12.5. So far I have put approximately 60PED through this process. So it seems the QR is going up reasonably fast. I have gained a NR in maufacturing metal components and have seen alot of engineering skill hits (hopefully this will help my mining also).

out of interest what your engineering skill at? Because it slows down very considerably post 500 skill points Sad

I am not sure what my engineering is but I know its well below 500.

The basic sheet metal runs have been getting me about 60-65% (tt value) returns on average and my BP is up to 14.1 QR.

I ran out of materials for the sheet metal and had the right stuff for tubes so I tried them out to see if there was a difference.
Starting from 1.0 i have got the QR up to 19.4 and have been getting about an 80% (tt value) return. However since there is no markup on tubes the sheet metal is still better for me. The only reason I let myself do tubes was cause it would also give man. metal skills that I figure will help with sheet metal.

The skills and BP qr improvements seemed to come faster with the tubes - just a feeling not scientific evidence for it.

I am going mining to get more materials.

Will keep you updated.

BTW - i have noticed a definite increase in success and ammounts produced with the increase in BP QR - not so much with the skills but they are lower so may not be registering significantly yet
