Spambots

As many of you have noticed many recent people who have joined have turned out to be spam bots. To combat this problem maybe we could have atleast a numerical key on the login or something where the registration key is sent to a person by email? As a moderator I find it rather annoying to get on and see advertisements for porn sites and gambling on the site which means I have to take the time out to destroy them. At the moment I admit its not that bad, but what happens once we get a large quantity of spammers?

E-mail activation seems to be the best way to solve problem. I hope that spambots are unable to use e-mail (at least at the moment).

I open for any kinde of solution. Any thing that can make this forum safer. Big Grin
It's sad to hear, that you most take time to clean this froum from spam.
A agree with Vanburen that a (quote) "E-mail activation seems to be the best way to solve problem"
Step too, if a just one activation isn't sufficient. Is to send a new logging key to everyone every month.
But I hope that step too will not be necessary.

The monthly logging key wouldn't be necessary because these spam bots just show up make one post and then leave the forums alone for good usually. The bots are planned to be expensable after one post and are expected to be banned.

As far as I remember there is box with code during registration process. Although it doesn't seem to be working as well as it should (we had few bots). E-mail activation should be enough. I doubt if any spambot can use e-mail.

Would anyone here be interested if I posted a list of all the spam bots I find on the forums? Not really sure if anyone would have a use for them but still, incase some of your have forums that aren't protected as well.

IP addresses would be more useful as they could try to register with different names on other boards Smile but a great idea none the less.

Could it be that its not actually a bot but rather a person who actually makes these bogus accounts and spams their advertising on the boards, because if it is theres really nothing we can do to stop it Sad Also older dial up conections with dynamic IP's will not be stopped by this and you may end up blocking innocent people from using the forum. Ica found in the past that more devius people tend to use dynamic IP's or IP scambling programs to get away with their nefarious activities.

I guess the only solution to these pains in our asses is to just block their user names, delete them from the boards, and then go about setting up some heavier security to rid us of the problem of them.

I found another spam bot, this time it was posting a set group of pornographic(unverified, stated by the bot) links. Here's its ip address:

After going through the forums I have also found a second spam bot that I'm not quite sure about. I'm going to leave it up but I edited out the links because they were worthless. I only realized the guy is a 90% spambot after looking at the links and seeing they were the classic spam bot style thing. His ip address is: 84.19.184.156.
The message:
How do you do !

I'm just a newbie here, so please dont be angry on me, looks like you are all normal guys here,
So I would like you to ask, where did you donwload all of this MP3 files ? I tried several websites like
spambot.com and spambot.com they
are quite good, but maybe you can recommend me some other sites for it ?

Thank you in advance for you help !
Hope to see you again

If he doesn't post anything else within a day, I'm deleting that post.

I have an idea, although I do not know if it's possible. Every spambot writes only one post, every post written by spambot contains clickable link or address (http://www.something.smth). Why don't filter (in the moment of sending) all first posts (first made by user) in search for links. In case if in first post, link is found block such a post. Sounds easy but I don't know if it can be done.

I agree perhaps make it so that new memebers cant post hyperlinks until their 10th post and pictures until say tehir 50 or 100th post? We all know its just a matter of time before someone posts a 800x600 porn flic on here from a single post spambot and since we dont have mods on here all the time itd quite probably stay around for a few hours before it gets nerfed.
