Well if you were going to chip I would say chip courage. Your first courage chip of about 12.50 PED TT will give you about 5 HP or so.
Now if you want quick hitpoints pick up 3 1x0's and break all three of them 5x each once a day. Thats right burn 15 1x0's a day and within two to three weeks you will gain 3-4 hitponts. Close combat skills courage faster and therefor raises hitpoints faster.

just in the beginning. I would not stick with it mostly because after a while you don't gainmuch HP with it. Just skill it until it starts to heavily slow down. Your agility and evade will go up quickly too.

well
i use melee as main weapon, and the melee combat skill and also bravado are HP skills skilled with it
i used rifles til 2k in rifle (hp skill) and now using handguns for finishing
so in the beginning, melee will skill HP faster
but, depending on your other skills, and long term goals you will unlock Coolness faster when you stay just with rifle at a prof standing level of 4.0
this skill can easily compensate the "normal" increase of melee
rifle and handgun users unlock coolness earlier, because their skill increase towards the prof standing is a bit faster than compareable melee prof standings
now, since you use handguns mainly, well, which one ?
you could consider to get some power fists/shortblades for finishing
so you skill other HP skills by the way but can stay with your main profession to get Coolness
depending on how much dam your pistols do max, you can consider an axe too
btw, prospecting and surveying are HP skills too, so if you have the cash, you might consider mining on the way too

it costs peds
and skills are related so chipping one skill does not always have the expected effect.
Enjoy!

If I were you to gain dirt cheap skills, chip into courage a tiny bit, and then grab a tt blade of each kind, gloves, and a club/whip and go beat some stuff down and skill all the base meele skills to about 1500

Skills you should chip for HP:
Courage
Melee Combat
Athletics
Dexterity
Combat Reflexes
Kinda in the order of skill giving the most skills (best one on top)
Unlocked skills that give HP are Serendipity, Coolness, Combat Sense and Commando.
I read in this thread someone saying Courage adds 5 HP for 12.50 ped chip.
That cannot be said, it goes per X levels.
I think Courage gives 1 HP for every 350 levels.
Melee Combat maybe 1 HP for every 500 levels.
Btw, the reason all the ppl tell you to do melee is unknown to me.
Only Melee Combat gives HP, the rest of the melee skills are irrelivant
More info on how many HP per level skill you get can be found here: http://www.pe-wiki.info/Chart.aspx?chart=Skill
Happy chipping!

bravado was wrong then, sry
well, but in melee you tend to be more in close combat, so you don't gain just melee combat, also more courage, athletics and other defence related skills
even if some are not HP relevant, so is a higher chance of evading worth some HP too in the end
